Development of Superconducting Coated Tapes With Enhanced Critical Current

Structured Materials Industries, Inc. (SMI, Piscataway, NJ) has received multiple Phase I SBIR contracts to develop 2nd generation superconducting coated conductors, with enhanced current carrying capacity. The superconducting tapes are based on films of YBa2Cu3Ox, with two separate strategies to incorporate effective flux pinning.

MOCVD processes for depositing superconducting YBa2Cu3Ox films doped with rare earth elements (such as holmium) and multilayer films of YBa2Cu3Ox and CeO2 are presently being developed. These enhanced critical current processes are compatible with SMI's existing technology for continuous reel-to-reel production of kilometer scale lengths of superconducting tapes.
